Day 5.
We took a bus from the Elegant Lady to visit Nuremberg. Our first stop was a very sobering experience as we visited the Nazi Rally grounds and could visualize the old newsreel pictures. Next was the castle. Then it was on to the market square.

Haptmarkt is the commercial centre of the ancient city, site of the famous Christmas market (Christkindlmarkt) and the location of the elaborate Gothic church Frauenkirche. The church's facade comprises the clockwork mechanism designed by Mannleinlaufen. At mid-day every day the clock strikes and seven statues of princes dance around Charles IV, accompanied by the music of a glockenspiel. The square is also the site of the Goldener Brunnen, a splendid fountain built in 1396.

Day 6

Today we continued through the Main Danube canal. We will have travelled through 16 locks. Several would raise us 100 feet at a time.

The Watershed Monument is the highest point on the Main Danube Canal. At this points water either flows north to the North Sea or south to the Black Sea

Regensberg is a beautiful city. We had a long walking tour and arrive back at the Elegant Lady in time to move to a safe location between several locks. The water was rising quickly and the Danube had been closed to river traffic

nav102

Instead of cruising to Passau, we took a motor coach from Regensberg. This worked quite well as we had the opportunity to hear a concert on one of the largest church pipe organs in the world in the magnificent St. Stephans Cathedral.

These are some pictures from the flooding Danube River at Passau as well as the infamous Degendorf Railway bridge that can stop river traffic even during minor flooding.

While in Regensberg we enjoyed a traditional Bavarian dinner. Here Petra and Renate prepare the dining room and chef Leo carves the meat.

Cruising the Main and Danube Rivers - Part 2
Nuremberg to Passau

This part of the journey started in Nuremberg. Then we traveled the amazing Main Danube canal. It reaches a height of more than 1,332 feet (406 m) over the Swabian Alps through a series of locks. We then reached the flooding Danube River, visited Regensberg and the pretty city of Passau with its impressive cathedral.
